Why Marcus Rashford, Harry Maguire and Antony miss Rangers v Manchester United friendly

Manchester United have confirmed Marcus Rashford, Harry Maguire and Antony will all miss the club’s pre-season friendly against Rangers on Saturday.

United, who lost 1-0 to Rosenborg in their first pre-season game, continue their preparations for the new Premier League season with a meeting with Scottish giants Rangers at Murrayfield.

Erik ten Hag picked a 26-man squad for the match and the players travelled to Edinburgh on Saturday morning, with new signing Leny Yoro among those in line to feature.

Yoro completed a £52m move to Old Trafford earlier this week after Manchester United beat Real Madrid to the French defender.

The 18-year-old trained with his new team-mates at Carrington on Friday and was included in United’s squad to face Rangers alongside Andre Onana and Jadon Sancho, who missed the first pre-season game in Norway.

But Ten Hag will be without several first-team players, including Rashford, Maguire, Antony and Scotland star Scott McTominay.

Explaining the absence of some players who will not feature against Rangers, Manchester United said: ‘Antony, Victor Lindelof and Marcus Rashford miss this one with small niggles.

‘Harry Maguire is also an absentee but has been seen in training this week as he works his way back to full fitness from an injury.

‘Tyrell Malacia is continuing his fitness programme at Carrington meanwhile, where Scott McTominay is also building up his sharpness having recently returned from the Euros.’

Ten Hag will hope for an improved performance from Manchester United against Rangers after criticising his team following their defeat to Rosenborg.

‘The result is not secondary. We play pre-season but at Manchester United, there’s a standard,’ he told MUTV after the game.

‘You win games. Definitely you don’t lose games. If you can’t win, don’t lose the game as we did at the end, the last second of the game.

‘The performance is more important. The performance was below standard.’

Manchester United face Arsenal, Liverpool and Real Betis in their remaining pre-season friendlies before meeting Manchester City in the Community Shield final on August 10.

The Red Devils finished eighth in the Premier League last season, while their next opponents Rangers finished second in the Scottish Premiership behind arch-rivals Celtic.
