How Real Madrid have earned nearly €75 million from former academy graduate

Not many players from the Real Madrid youth academy go on to get an opportunity with the first-team setup and establish themselves at the Santiago Bernabeu.

But Alvaro Morata was one such player who rose through the ranks and made a mark in the Merengues’ senior team. He made 91 appearances across two stints at the club, scoring 31 goals in the process.

While his impact might not have been sustained over a long period, the Spaniard still continues to benefit Real Madrid in terms of finances.

Morata’s move to AC Milan leaves money for Real Madrid

Indeed, Morata’s recent transfer to AC Milan from Atletico Madrid, in a deal worth €13 million, has left some cash in the Real Madrid coffers.

Owing to FIFA’s solidarity mechanism that is in place to benefit training clubs, Real Madrid have pocketed €390,000 from the €13 million that AC Milan shelled out on the 31-year-old striker, having trained him between the ages of 12 and 23.

A total of €75 million earned

Morata joined the Real Madrid youth academy in 2008, arriving from Getafe and went on to make his senior debut two years later under then-manager Jose Mourinho.

After enjoying his proper breakthrough campaign in 2013/14, the striker left the club to join Juventus in a deal worth €20 million.

Real Madrid would go on to re-sign Morata only a couple of years later in 2016, shelling out a sum of €30 million, only to sell him to Chelsea in 2017 in a huge deal.

Indeed, Chelsea signed Morata in a deal worth €66 million that would rise to around €80 million including add-ons.

Real Madrid also pocketed close to €2 million through the FIFA solidarity mechanism when Chelsea loaned Morata to Atletico Madrid and then sold him permanently in 2020.

Meanwhile, another €600,000 was left in the coffers when the Spain captain was loaned to Juventus by Atletico in 2020. Now, with him moving to Milan, another €390,000 has ended up in Real Madrid’s treasury.
