Real Madrid aim to end a 17-year-old curse by winning La Liga this season

Real Madrid’s first game of the new season was an eventful one, to say the least. Playing against Atalanta in Warsaw, the Los Blancos not only registered their first trophy of the season but also witnessed Kylian Mbappé’s debut goal for the team.

The men in white now face their first opponent for the season in La Liga as they travel to Estadi de Son Moix to lock horns with Mallorca.

As the defending champions, the pressure is undoubtedly high on the men in white to defend their crown.

Struggles of the past

As Real Madrid set out on their objective to bring home a second consecutive La Liga title, it is very surprising to know that the club have struggled to pull it off many times in the recent past.

In fact, the last time Los Blancos lifted two successive La Liga titles was back in 2008 when Fabio Capello’s side took the accolade in the 2006-07 and 2007-08 seasons.

Notably, their domestic success at the time came at the cost of Champions League glory as the team saw relatively early eliminations in both seasons.

Since then, the Galacticos won La Liga in 2011-12 but fell short to Barcelona the next season. In 2016-17 and 2021-22 as well, the Catalans made strong comebacks to take back the title from Real Madrid after Los Blancos won the league.

Real Madrid’s success in the UEFA Champions League is well known, and the team’s record of winning three successive European titles is one of the most absurd UCL records of all time.

It is high time, however, that the men in white break the 17-year hiatus and win a second consecutive league title at home.

With Kylian Mbappe and Endrick now in the squad, moreover, Real Madrid must target nothing short of the pinnacle in every competition they take part in.
