Guler or Brahim: Who should replace the injured Bellingham in the Real Madrid lineup?

The new season has introduced several changes to Real Madrid’s dynamics, formation, and fundamental principles on the field.

Los Blancos have been bolstered by the arrival of Kylian Mbappe, but integrating him into the team has required some tactical adjustments.

One constant, however, was Jude Bellingham. The young midfielder played a similar role to last season in both of Real Madrid’s official games this season, and he was beginning to return to his best form after a challenging period. In fact, he was arguably the best player on the field in both matches.

The news of Bellingham’s injury and subsequent sidelining for at least a month is devastating. While this is a significant setback for Ancelotti, it also presents an opportunity for other players in the squad who have yet to shine.

Fortunately for the Italian tactician, the squad has sufficient depth to cover for Bellingham’s absence. Two standout options are Arda Guler and Brahim Diaz.

The most natural replacement for Bellingham in Real Madrid’s lineup is a player who joined the club in the same window as the Englishman – Arda Guler.

After a difficult period with injuries last season, the Turkish star dazzled at Euro 2024 with his quality and consistency, earning himself a push for a regular starting spot at Real Madrid.

However, competing with the reigning Golden Boy has not been easy for the youngster, despite his form. Guler has only seen nine minutes of action so far this season, and this could be the break he has been waiting for.

An attacking midfielder by trade, Guler excels at breaking lines with his incisive passes and would fit perfectly into the role left vacant by Bellingham’s fitness setback.

Brahim Diaz

While Guler may be the superior option from a tactical perspective, a strong case can be made for Brahim Diaz based on practicality.

Diaz was the one who filled in for Bellingham throughout last season, as Guler was also sidelined for much of the campaign. Whenever Diaz stepped in for Bellingham, he performed admirably, and his statistics speak volumes.

In 18 starts and 31 La Liga appearances for Real Madrid last season, Diaz scored eight goals and provided six assists. Furthermore, the team remained unbeaten in all the games where he filled in for Bellingham.

Ancelotti now faces a dilemma between choosing a tried and tested option or a theoretically perfect replacement and the decision will hinge on what he sees in training ahead of tomorrow’s clash.

Luka Modric would also be an option but Ancelotti could need the veteran as cover for Aurelien Tchouameni in the pivot position in Eduardo Camavinga’s absence.

Given how Diaz has seen more minutes this season and has provided results covering for Bellingham in the past, however, Ancelotti will likely favour the Spaniard over Guler on the night.

Needless to say, the Turkish star will also benefit from the situation as he is likely to see more minutes off the bench if he does not start.
