When nothing seemed to be working for Real Madrid against Real Betis even an hour into the game, Carlo Ancelotti turned to his bench. He signalled to Brahim Diaz to come on the field alongside Fran Garcia in what turned out to be a pivotal decision.
While the youngster did not directly contribute to a goal, it is no coincidence that the Merengues broke the deadlock two minutes after his introduction.
In just 25 minutes, Diaz provided one key pass, completed 92% of his passes and 100% of his long balls attempted. Further, he was successful with four of his five attempted dribbles.
Speaking to the media after the game, the youngster specifically lauded his teammate Federico Valverde for his influence on the field and match-defining assist in the second half.
“Fede just has to be applauded. He is a fundamental pillar of this squad and in all games, he shows what he is and does not give up.”
“I did not expect that backheel pass. He is an incredible player and having him on the team is very good, he is an all-rounder,” he added on the Uruguayan.
Conversation with Kylian Mbappe
Commenting on the conversations he shared with Kylian Mbappe on the field, the Moroccan star revealed how the Frenchman never lost his cool even for a minute despite the growing pressure.
“I told Mbappe that we had to score a goal now and he told me to be calm, that it would arrive. And he has scored two.”
“He is a huge player, very top. Besides, he was right: we had to be calm,” he added.
Finally, Diaz was asked to detail how his arrival on the field changed the dynamic for Los Blancos, for both goals for Real Madrid on the night only panned after his introduction.
“My entry gave the team what it needed. I came in with fresh legs and I helped in the second goal.”
“Also in several plays when it comes to creating opportunities. I leave very happy and being positive,” he added.
