A centre-back by trade, Martinez has been compared to the legendary Sergio Ramos due to his performances in the youth leagues, coupled with his style of play.
Martinez even made an impression during Real Madrid’s pre-season campaign. But his hopes of making a breakthrough this season were shattered following an ACL injury that ruled him out on the sidelines for the season.
Marc Bernal shows support for Martinez
Now, with Martinez undergoing surgery today, the youngster has received welcome support from Barcelona counterpart Marc Bernal.
The Barcelona starlet was seen commenting on Martinez’s Instagram post about his surgery. The youngster commented, “One day less.”
It must be noted Bernal, who is Martinez’s teammate in the Spanish international youth team, is going through a similar situation right now.
The young midfielder was destined to make a breakthrough in Catalonia this season before he picked up an ACL injury which ruled him out for the campaign.
Shortly after Bernal’s injury came to light, Joan Martinez was quick to show support. The Real Madrid prodigy had posted about Bernal on his Instagram, with the caption, “Cheer up, this is just a stone in our path.”
Despite belonging to two of Europe’s fiercest arch-rivals, the bonhomie between Joan Martinez and Marc Bernal is a welcome sight for Spanish football and an indicator that La Roja may have built themselves a solid young core, led by the academies of Barcelona and Real Madrid.
