Club with the Most Ballon d’Or Wins: Can Real Madrid Overtake Barcelona?

Which team has won the most Ballon d’Ors? Will Real Madrid bҽat Barcelona?

The shortlist for the 2024 Ballon d’Or has been released, but it will still be more than a month before the award is given to its winner. Soon, someone will be named as Lionel Messi’s successor.

France Football gives out an award every year to the best player of the year. However, the vote rules say that the success of the team as a whole, whether it’s for the club or the country, should also be taken into account.

Football is a team sport, so no one can play by themselves. The people who have won the coveted golden ball have mostly played for Europe’s best clubs, but there have been a few important exceptions.

Bellingham gets Ballon d'Or nod, but not Messi or Ronaldo

For example, when Messi won his famous eighth title last year, Inter Miami became the first non-European team to have a player win the award.

Still, the award’s winner has been at many top clubs since its humble start in 1956. Now, Sports Mole looks at how another win for either Real Madrid or Barcelona would put them at the top of the all-time list.

Over the tournament’s 68-year history, several teams have had a player win it just once. Blackpool (Stanley Matthews, 1956), Dukla Prague (Josef Masopust, 1962), and Borussia Monchengladbach (Allan Simonsen, 1977) are three of the least likely times this has happened.

Hamburger SV, Inter Milan, and Dynamo Kiev are the only three teams to have won the France Football poll twice. Only teams with four wins or more are considered European kings.

Denis Law, Bobby Charlton, George Best, and Cristiano Ronaldo are the four winners for Manchester United. Bayern Munich, on the other hand, has five: Gerd Muller scores once and sets up goals for both “Der Kaiser” Franz Beckenbauer and “Goal Machine” Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.

Italian powerhouses AC Milan and Juventus are tied for eighth place with eight goals each. In 1988 and 1989, when the beautiful Dutch striker Marco van Basten was in charge, Milan won all three awards.

But it may not come as a surprise that the most successful clubs are Barcelona and Real Madrid, with 12 wins each. Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have helped their teams win a lot of games.

That means that if one wins this year, the other will fall to second place, and both have several strong candidates on the 30-person group.
