How Real Madrid captain stopped the Madrid derby from suspension

Real Madrid’s clash against Atletico Madrid last night was marred by controversy, particularly indiscipline from the stands behind Thibaut Courtois in the second half.

The Belgian goalkeeper, who celebrated after Eder Militao scored the opener for Los Blancos, had multiple objects hurled at him after the hour mark which forced the referee to command all players off the field.

The two teams returned 17 minutes later and played out the rest of the 90 minutes where Angel Correa scored a late equaliser for the hosts.

Carvajal, the saviour

Security at Civitas Metropolitano was significantly increased after the incident involving Courtois with extra vigilance maintained on the stands in question.

Any further repetition of such a shameful act would result in the game being suspended on the night with a new date assigned with strict protocol.

Shockingly, MARCA reveals that it was a real possibility last night.

As relayed by the Spanish outlet, another object was thrown towards the Real Madrid goalkeeper after Atletico Madrid’s equaliser just before the final whistle.

Had it been brought to the notice of the referee, the game would be suspended for the night but Dani Carvajal handled the situation with great maturity and saved the clash.

Seeing the object hurled on the field, the Real Madrid veteran picked it up and threw it off the field without raising the topic, helping the game culminate on the night.

After all, Real Madrid cannot afford another game in the already hectic schedule.

As it stands, no serious sanction will be applied to Atletico Madrid as no object hit Courtois. However, the club will still face economic sanctions and a partial closure of its facilities in the coming games.
