The final matches of the Copa América group stage continue on Sunday, with Mexico and battling it out for the chance to move on to the next round.

Venezuela sits at the top of Group B with six points after beating both teams, while Mexico and Ecuador are tied with three points apiece. A win for either team would advance them to the knockout round. Ecuador currently leads Mexico on goal differential, giving Ecuador the advantage in the event of a draw and making it a must-win game for Mexico.

Historically, Mexico has the upper hand: In 25 matchups with Ecuador, Mexico has won 15, while Ecuador has been victorious four times and drawn with Mexico six times. Their last meeting, a friendly on June 5, 2022, was a 0-0 draw.

  • Group B scenarios

Mexico can only advance to the quarterfinals with a win tonight over Ecuador. A tie or a loss would eliminate El Tri from moving on. If Mexico and Ecuador ends in a draw, they would each have four points, but Ecuador would hold the tie breaker with better goal difference.

Mexico winning would guarantee a spot in the knockout stage, but its next opponent would be determined by the outcome of the other Group B match between Venezuela and Jamaica. Venezuela, with six points in hand, has clinched a spot in the knockout round. Jamaica, already eliminated and playing mostly for pride, could make things interesting with a big win and knock Venezuela into second place.

The team that finishes in first place in Group B will face Canada, but the second place team will go up against mighty Argentina, the reigning World Cup and Copa América champions.
