Real Madrid captain set to back historic 58-year-old record vs Celta Vigo

On Saturday, when Real Madrid take on Celta Vigo at the Balaidos, club captain Luka Modric will etch his name into the club’s illustrious history books forever.

One of the best midfielders of this era, the Croatian international has enjoyed a long and illustrious career, filled with immense success, and will add another feather to his cap this weekend.

Modric will become the oldest player to feature for Real Madrid

Indeed, when Modric steps onto the pitch against Celta Vigo, he will become the oldest player ever to represent Real Madrid, surpassing the legendary Ferenc Puskas.

Puskas, the Hungarian great, set the previous mark when he played his final match for Los Blancos in May 1966 – a cup tie against Real Betis – at 39 years and 38 days old.

Modric, who turned 39 last month, will eclipse that record if he features against Celta Vigo this Saturday, when he will be 39 years and 40 days old – breaking a 58-year-old record in the process.

Modric’s imminent achievement is a testament to his exceptional longevity and enduring class.

Since joining Real Madrid in 2012, he has been instrumental in the club’s success, helping secure numerous trophies including six Champions League titles.

His vision, technique, and leadership have made him a fan favourite and a key component of the team’s midfield for over a decade.

The veteran club captain already made history this season when he became the most decorated player in Real Madrid history, with 27 trophies to his name by lifting the UEFA Super Cup. Now, another historic milestone awaits the club legend.

At 39, Modric still has the hunger and fire in his belly to keep succeeding at the highest level and as such, another one-year renewal at the end of the season is not entirely off the table.
