Despite the ever-changing nature of the beautiful game – and most notably, in the Premier League, the overwhelming feeling of the match-going experience will never die, with people up and down the country heading spending plenty of time and money to watch their favourite team in action every weekend.

But how well supported is every team in England’s well-documented top division? Taking the following factors into consideration, betting site OBLG have deciphered who – out of the current 20 teams – has the best fanbase in terms of constant support.

20-16

Fulham, Brentford, Nottingham Forest, Ipswich Town, Everton

Kicking off proceedings is west London outfit Fulham, who boast an overall index score of 28.7/100 with their fanbase decreasing by 3% in the last decade. Just 9% of the conversations surrounding the club were positive, perhaps thanks to rising ticket prices, the club contributed to their lowly index score of 28.7. For Brentford, the combination of Ivan Toney’s long-term absence and a lack of good football saw them as one of the worst-supported teams in the top flight with an index score of 33.7/100.

Despite a turbulent 2023/24 – a season when Steve Cooper got sacked and they flirted with relegation – Nottingham Forest’s fan base stuck by their side by filling 97% of their ground. Newly-promoted Ipswich Town find themselves just above the relegation zone with their index score of 28.1 placing them just above the aforementioned trio. Everton have struggled in the top flight in recent seasons – and that’s reflected in their index score of 41.

West Ham United, Arsenal, Southampton, Brighton & Hove Albion, Crystal Palace

The peak of West Ham United’s support was during their Upton Park days when thousands turned up to watch the Hammers in action. A change in stadium has somewhat dampened the mood – but that was, of course, boosted by their Europa Conference League campaign in 2022/23.

Mikel Arteta’s transformational effect on Arsenal has contributed to an index score of 41.8, just behind Southampton’s 41.9, with them almost filling up the entirety of a raucous Emirates Stadium in 2023/24 (99%).

Brighton & Hove Albion – who were, not too long ago, battling it out in League One – have endured a mixed bag of results in recent campaigns, but the arrival of Fabian Hurzeler has a brilliant feel about it among the fanbase on the coast. With 99% of the stadium filled last time out, their index score stands at a healthy 42.

South London-based Crystal Palace, who boast an index score of 42.2, just missed out on a top 10 spot, with 12% of their online conversations being of a positive nature. According to the report, their fanbase has grown by 3% in the last 10 years.

Liverpool, Chelsea, Bournemouth, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Newcastle United

Liverpool and Chelsea kick off the top 10 with index scores of 42.3 and 45.6, respectively, with both clubs being one of the remaining members of an exclusive club to not be relegated from the top flight. The support for both clubs has always been fruitful – that said, Anfield’s capacity has not always been reached with only 92% of the Merseyside-based stomping ground being full last term. That’s despite being widely admired as one of the most atmospheric grounds in world football.

Bournemouth sharply follow in eighth place with an index score of 45.6/100 and 10% of the online conversations being of a positive nature. Galvanised by the arrival of boss Andoni Iraola, the Cherries are among those looking to be a regular in the league’s top half.

Wolverhampton Wanderers and Newcastle United cap off the 10-6 category. A total of 10% percent of conversations about the former are positive, whereas the latter filed St James’ Park 100% in 2023/24 – proving that the Geordies are among the country’s very best.

Aston Villa, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City, Leicester City, Manchester United

Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur, who boast one of the best stadiums in world football, spent last season battling it out for a Champions League spot, with the former reigning victorious come the final day of the campaign – but both hold impressive reputations as some of the best-supported teams in the top flight, boasting respective index scores of 53 and 51.2.

Often lambasted for the lack of support, Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City have debunked that myth by boasting some of the league’s most supportive fans after winning, yet another, Premier League title. The newly-promoted Leicester City can pride themselves on having a brilliant following – as evidenced by their index score of 55.7. Last season, they filled 97% of the King Power and that will only have increased upon their promotion.

Despite enduring a tough post-Sir Alex Ferguson era, which has seen a plethora of big defeats, Manchester United’s fanbase has remained as positive and fruitful as ever with Old Trafford 98% full last term – which is no mean feat given the size and magnitude of Old Trafford. Perhaps their FA Cup final win against their local rivals added to their overall index score of 69.7 – the highest, by some margin, in the division.
