Gareth Southgate set for immediate job offer if he steps down as England manager

If Gareth Southgate has taken charge of his last England game then there is no need for him to be out of work for long, with ITV keen to snap him up for punditry duty.

The Three Lions manager is currently taking time to make a decision about his future following defeat in the final of Euro 2024 to Spain on Sunday night.

England have been beaten in back-to-back European Championship finals, with the 2-1 loss in Berlin at the weekend following the penalty shootout defeat to Italy at Wembley in 2021.

Southgate’s current contract with the Football Association runs until December, although the FA would like him to stay on and manage England at the 2026 World Cup.

His future is in his own hands and Southgate is now taking time to decide whether he wants a crack at a fifth major tournament or he has had enough of the job after another painful defeat in a final.

If he decides to step away from the role and let the FA give someone else a go then we may be seeing Southgate during England matches anyway.

The Daily Mail reports that ITV are very keen on the England boss and will offer him a pundit role if he gives up the top job.

Whether Southgate would be keen to take up the media role or not is yet to be seen as he may want a break from football entirely or quite the opposite.

There will certainly be offers in club football for the England boss if he leaves the international scene, with Manchester United having been heavily linked with him recently, until Erik ten Hag signed a new contract.

Southgate said that directly after defeat to Spain was not the right time to make a decision on his future, but also confirmed that he will not take a long time to decide.

‘We’ve got time to make decisions and I won’t need weeks, but also I think I’ve earned the right to give myself a few days just to think things through,’ he said. ‘I know where it would have been if we went out in the group stage, that’s for sure. I have a pretty good idea in my head.’
