Liverpool legend picks Real Madrid as favourites for the Champions League – ‘What a club’

Real Madrid’s UEFA Champions League calendar is ruthless, to say the least.

Already having lost to Lille on match day 2, Los Blancos were put to a stern test in the third match day against Borussia Dortmund and had to force a comeback win to take three points.

Their struggle, however, is only beginning as their next two games in the event are against AC Milan and Liverpool, the latter being away from home at Anfield.

Given the rocky start they have endured to the season, they would not normally be placed anywhere close to the favourites tag in the event. However, their rich history of pulling off comebacks against all odds in the UCL means nothing can be ruled out.

“You know what Real Madrid are going to do with this new Champions League format, they’re going to sneak through that qualifying round by the skin of their teeth and then they’ll end up going on to win it all. What a club,” he said, laying his faith in Los Blancos.

Elaborating on the format, he spoke on how it has the potential to set up a great race for qualifying spots, especially in the case of Real Madrid who face heavyweights early in the event.

“It’s funny with Real Madrid – obviously they’re not in the top eight at the moment. And the next two games are AC Milan and Liverpool,” he began.

“Let’s say we (Liverpool) beat them at Anfield and they get a draw with AC Milan; you’re in a situation where Real Madrid has got three games to go and the table’s moving,” he concluded.
