Manchester United urged to ‘nick’ England star from Liverpool

Teddy Sheringham has urged Manchester United to ‘nick’ Anthony Gordon from Liverpool’s grasp and says the England winger would become a ‘top player’ at Old Trafford or Anfield.

Gordon was linked with a shock move to Liverpool during Euro 2024, with Newcastle United reportedly offering the 23-year-old to their Premier League rivals to stay in line with profit and sustainability rules.

Liverpool were also interested in the deal but backed off when Newcastle asked for young and promising Reds defender Jarell Quansah to be included in the deal.

While talks broke down, reports claim Liverpool remain interested in Gordon and could make a fresh offer to Newcastle this summer.

Gordon endured a quiet start to his career at St James’ Park following a £45m move from boyhood club Everton in January 2023 but emerged as a key player for Eddie Howe last season, scoring 11 goals in the Premier League.

His impressive form saw him included in Gareth Southgate’s squad for Euro 2024 but Gordon barely featured in the Three Lions’ run to the final in Germany despite several pundits calling for his inclusion.

Sheringham is an admirer of Gordon and believes he would be a great addition for Manchester United as the Old Trafford club look to bolster Erik ten Hag’s squad ahead of the new season.

Netherlands forward Joshua Zirkee and French defender Leny Yoro have already arrived through the doors but Ten Hag believes more signings are needed to turn United into title contenders.

‘Manchester United need top players at the football club in all positions and if they are already performing in the Premier League then you need to bring these players in,’ Sheringham told OLBG.

‘Liverpool might well want Anthony Gordon and we know he’s going to be a top player so Manchester United should try and nick him before he goes there.

‘You can’t keep having average players come into your club. You need top players and I think Anthony Gordon is one of those.’

Manchester United finished just eighth in the Premier League last season and Sheringham believes the squad is calling out for some leaders.

The ex-striker wishes United had beaten Arsenal and Bayern Munich to fellow England stars Declan Rice and Harry Kane last summer.

‘Manchester United need to sign top players all over the pitch,’ Sheringham added. ‘They haven’t got any leaders at the club.

‘They need leaders but they don’t come cheap. Top players, leaders on the football pitch, that’s why when they do become available, like last summer in Harry Kane and Declan Rice, they should have been in for them.’
