Manchester City aim to fend off Real Madrid by renewing star midfielder’s contract

The recent set of injuries during the international break has once again raised alarm bells at Real Madrid, which continues to operate with a razor-thin squad.

Although Real Madrid are unlikely to make too many moves in the winter transfer window, many believe the Spanish giants could make some big moves in the summer of 2025.

Los Blancos are already weighing up a 2025 move for German superstar Florian Wirtz, in an attempt to further reinforce the ranks in the creative department.

However, recent reports indicate Real Madrid are also interested in the services of Rodri, as they look to add some much-needed solidity in the defensive midfield position.

Man City looking to renew Rodri’s contract

That said, Manchester City are not going to make it easy for Real Madrid, in their pursuit of Rodri this summer.

According to Mundo Deportivo, the Premier League champions are looking to fend off interest from Los Blancos by trying to renew the contract of Rodri.

The Spanish international is coming on the back of a stellar 2023/24 campaign, where he was one of the best-performing midfielders in Europe.

Rodri was also a central figure in the Spanish team that secured the European Championship this summer, which has led to calls over the midfielder being handed this year’s Ballon d’Or.

Keeping that in mind, Man City are determined to secure the future of their star player, whose contract at Etihad expires in 2027.

As per the report, Man City are now prioritising the renewal of Rodri and are ready to hand him a contract offer that could extend his deal until 2029.

The Premier League champions are likely to offer Rodri a sizable raise, due to his services at Etihad over the years.

Rodri, for his part, has never hinted any desire to leave Etihad. However, the report indicates that if the Spaniard does leave the club, Real Madrid is likely to emerge as his desired destination.
