Miles ahead: Real Madrid dominate Barcelona in trophy haul in the last five seasons

Real Madrid have established themselves as the team to beat, setting a momentum that their La Liga rivals Barcelona simply cannot match.

It has been seen that each season, the gap between the two clubs widens and the most glaring disparity is in the number of titles won and the outcome of individual matches.

After securing the UEFA Super Cup, Real Madrid now boast 12 major trophies in the last five seasons, compared to just three for Barcelona.

In this period, Barcelona have endured three trophyless seasons (2019-20, 2021-22, and 2023-24), while Madrid have experienced just one (2020-21).

The difference is quite significant

During these five years, Barcelona have managed to win just one of the two key trophies each season—the La Liga or the Champions League—compared to Real Madrid’s haul of three La Liga titles and two Champions League crowns since the 2019-20 season.

The growing divide between Madrid and Barcelona is becoming increasingly apparent. Los Blancos have been relentless, averaging three major titles per season over the last three years, which has decisively distanced them from Barcelona, who have struggled to keep pace.

The power shift is evident when comparing the balance of titles over time: in the last 11 seasons, Madrid led Barcelona 25-17 in trophies, but in the last five seasons, the gap has widened to 12-3 in Madrid’s favour.

European triumphs are a different story altogether

Furthermore, it is on the European stage where the difference between the two clubs is most stark. Real Madrid have not only won two Champions League titles during this period but have also consistently reached the latter stages of the competition.

Since the 2019-20 season, Madrid’s European journey has included two championship victories and four semi-final appearances, highlighting their dominance.

In contrast, Barcelona’s performance in Europe has been underwhelming, with quarter-final and round of 16 exits, and even two group stage eliminations in the same timeframe. This stark contrast underscores Madrid’s superiority on the continent.

The growing gap between the two clubs is also evident in their head-to-head encounters.

In the 15 El Clasicos that they have played in all competitions in the last five seasons, Real Madrid have emerged victorious in 10, with just one draw and four wins for Barcelona.
