Real Madrid captain breaks silence over renewal rumours – ‘It will change 50-60 times’

Luka Modric’s future at Real Madrid has been a hot topic recently, with speculation swirling about his desire to extend his contract in hopes of playing at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Modric, who is currently 39, has a contract that runs until 2026. Recent reports have suggested that he is looking for a one-year extension to ensure he remains at a top level for the next World Cup.

However, Modric has addressed these rumours, clarifying that while there may be some truth to the reports, nothing is set in stone at the moment. He hinted that such speculations are common in football and can change frequently.

Decision to be taken at the end of the season

Modric acknowledged that by the end of the season, there will likely be a lot of back-and-forth discussions about whether he will stay at Real Madrid or move on. For now, he is focusing on his current performance and the challenges ahead.

“It is probably one of the news now, but by the end of the season, it will change 50-60 times. It will be leave-stay, leave-stay,” he said (h/t Madrid Xtra).

“I really can’t say anything, I’m concentrating on what’s in front of me right now.”

Meanwhile, Modric also took the opportunity to reflect on Real Madrid’s start to the season.

The Croatian midfielder expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance so far, noting that although the season has been demanding, Real Madrid are in the mix for all the major trophies.

“I’m satisfied, everything is going well, but the season is not easy for us,” said the captain.

“We are playing a lot, but we are here, in the fight for all the trophies, and I believe that as the season progresses, our form will improve,” he explained.

While Modric’s future remains uncertain, his focus is clearly on helping Real Madrid achieve their goals this season.

Whether or not he will extend his stay beyond 2026 and play in another World Cup is still up in the air, but for now, his attention remains on the present.
