Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold has been Real Madrid’s top target to reinforce the right-back position for a decent period now.
The Merengues, who have prioritised signing free agents in recent years, see the opportunity to be optimal as the player is now in the final year of his contract and will thus be a free agent next summer.
Alexander-Arnold already has his heart set on a move to Spain and is ready to embrace the new challenge alongside the best in the business and also his close friend from the national team – Jude Bellingham.
Big blow to Liverpool
Now, according to reports from Spain (via Metro), Alexander-Arnold has already rejected multiple renewal offers from Liverpool and dreams of a transfer at this stage in his career. A departure on a free transfer thus appears likely.
Liverpool, who recently started a new chapter with Arne Slot, are desperate to get the defender to renew with the club and even rule out selling him in January unless a massive offer comes in.
They hope the player will change his mind and agree to a renewal in the second half of the season. But so far, the England international has turned down proposals that have been put in front of him.
Real Madrid are the front-runners, especially given how they lack a young right-back option in their current squad. Barcelona, Bayern Munich and PSG, however, are also in the race.
Everything now depends on the youngster and how firmly he can stand his ground in terms of not renewing. Come January, he will be free to negotiate with other clubs although it is likely for Real Madrid to wait until the summer transfer window opens.
