Former Barcelona forward Sergio Aguero has voiced strong criticism of Real Madrid following their absence from the Ballon d’Or ceremony.
Aguero pointed out that Real Madrid’s decision not to attend shows a sense of entitlement, as the club reportedly chose to boycott the event due to Vinicius Jr. not being awarded the Ballon d’Or.
“Well deserved. Rodri is the best player in the World. Football is for everyone, not only Real Madrid. They feel so entitled,” he said on his stream.
Questionable reaction from Madrid?
Real Madrid’s reaction came after it emerged that the award for the best player in the world would be presented to Rodri.
The decision to skip the ceremony stirred controversy, especially as Real Madrid had several potential candidates, including Vinicius Jr., Jude Bellingham, Dani Carvajal, and Toni Kroos.
Each of these players had a strong season and generated significant anticipation around their potential to secure the Ballon d’Or. However, the club’s dissatisfaction seemed to escalate when they learned that none of these players would take home the award.
Following the event, a Real Madrid spokesperson released a statement expressing the club’s frustration with the selection process, indicating their disappointment with what they perceived as biased criteria.
The spokesperson highlighted how Real Madrid felt Dani Carvajal, in particular, had been unjustly overlooked in the award considerations.
The frustration of Real Madrid was notable, especially considering that the club still managed to win two significant honours—recognition as The Best Club and Carlo Ancelotti’s award as The Best Coach of the Year.
Despite these achievements, the absence of individual player recognition clearly left a mark, leading to Real Madrid’s decision to distance themselves from the Ballon d’Or ceremony.
This situation has stirred further debate in the football world, as Real Madrid had the highest number of candidates in contention.
However, with their visible absence, the message from Real Madrid was clear—they question the validity of the Ballon d’Or selection process and stand in protest over what they believe to be unfair treatment towards their players.
