Juan Soto went 1-for-10 during the Subway Series as the Yankees took two out of three from the Mets over the weekend. But you already knew that. It’s all anybody’s been talking about for 72 hours. While that (deserved) narrative occupied all the headlines, it also distracted from other meaningful bits of Yankees news.
The Yankees got to enjoy an off day on Monday, but are right back in action Tuesday against the Texas Rangers. They’ll quickly return to reality after riding that high from Sunday Night Baseball’s thrilling victory in front of a national audience.
These key Yankees news updates got buried in Juan Soto’s Subway Series spotlight
- Right before the start of the series, manager Aaron Boone spoke to the media about Oswaldo Cabrera, who confirmed he underwent surgery on his injured ankle Thursday. But Boone revealed another troubling layer to the injury situation: Cabrera also suffered ligament damage, which wasn’t initially reported. He said Cabrera is expected to miss the season, but the Yankees will have more clarity in regard to the rehab process within the next 10 days.
- In a heartwarming wrinkle, Boone visited Cabrera in the hospital with Aaron Judge, Anthony Volpe and other Yankees players/staffers. That clearly helped Cabrera, who admitted he was in bad spirits after he had to be taken off the field in an ambulance during the series opener in Seattle.
- There are a few other important Yankees injury news updates as well. Jazz Chisholm said he expected to return in the next couple weeks as he recovers from an oblique issue. We’ll call that “good” news but will also believe it when we see it. The other updates? Not so much. Reliever Jake Cousins suffered a setback in his rehab from a forearm strain. But this time he’s dealing with a pectoral injury that has shut him down for a few days. Boone says the Yankees don’t think it’s serious (yeah, ok, cool). Giancarlo Stanton, who Cousins threw live batting practice to a couple of weeks ago, still doesn’t have a target date to go on a rehab assignment even though he’s eligible to be activated within the next couple weeks.
- In “former Yankees” news, Hayden Wesneski will sadly undergo Tommy John surgery. The former Yankees top prospect, who was traded to the Chicago Cubs back in 2022 for Scott Effross, ended up with the Houston Astros this offseason in the trade that sent Kyle Tucker to the Windy City. Wesneski made six starts with the Astros in 2025 and logged a 4.50 ERA and 1.09 WHIP in his quest to earn a full-time starting role. That’ll sadly be halted until the second half of 2026.
- Tyler Matzek elected free agency after he was designated for assignment to make room for Jonathan Loaisiga on the roster.
- As for the last thing we were expecting? Aaron (and Samantha) Judge are reportedly involved in a lawsuit alleging “designer deception” over $750K worth of purchases to renovate his homes in Tampa and NYC. Judge filed a lawsuit against Amanda Drew of “Drew Designs” back in January and is now being countersued. Something tells us Aaron and Samantha will be just fine, since we’ve hardly heard a peep. The Judges Chambers shall make the correct ruling.
